"My hope is that Harland 4S Ranch becomes a gathering place for the neighborhood and a staple in the community for years to come." Jeff Hansson, Harland Brewing's CEO and a Rancho Bernardo resident and parent, said that in January, the week before his company opened its first full-service restaurant on Paseo Del Sur.
Nine months later, the posted hours show something more specific than a gathering place. Three restaurants opened in 4S Ranch and Del Sur within about eight weeks of each other last winter, and they didn't end up in a head-to-head fight for the same dinner slot. Each one now covers a different part of the day. Together they've filled out a week that used to send people up the road to Rancho Bernardo or Poway. When 4SConnect picked a place for its December winter party, it chose one of the newcomers.
The turnover happened fast enough that it's easy to forget the order.
Two of the three moved into restaurant spaces with long local histories. The Meza family has run Ponce's since 1969, and the Del Sur branch was one of its newer locations. Miguel's space at 4S Commons sat empty for only a matter of weeks before Flecha opened.
None of the three is a homegrown 4S Ranch concept, and each one brought a different operating model. Nick the Greek is a fast-casual chain with close to 90 locations, many of them in California, but 4S Ranch is only its third in San Diego County. Harland, founded in 2018 by Hansson and Anthony Levas, had only run tasting rooms in South Park, Bay Park and Scripps Ranch before this one. Flecha arrived as a full-service cantina, and its own website describes the menu as one that "blends Mexican classics with contemporary fire."
Those differences explain why the hours fell out the way they did.
Look at the current posted hours side by side and the overlap is smaller than you'd expect from three restaurants within a short drive of each other.
Flecha Cantina covers both ends of the day. Its 4S Commons hours run 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. That makes it the latest-closing of the three on weekends and the earliest opening on Sunday. The restaurant lists happy hour Monday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m., Tacos + Tequila Tuesday from 3 p.m. to close, lunch Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and a Sunday brunch buffet from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Harland moved to one schedule for every day of the week. In January, launch coverage listed weekend openings of 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, a kids' menu, a patio and brunch. The restaurant's own page now posts "EVERY DAY: 11AM-9PM." So by the posted hours, Harland opens later on weekend mornings than it did at launch. Its daily window lines up with lunch through an early family dinner. The kitchen menu reported at opening included kung pao Brussels sprouts, grilled flatbread, chicken satay salad, salmon poke, braised short rib and half-roasted chicken. The draft list on its website showed 22 beers as of an update dated October 5, starting with the 4.2 percent Harland Citrus Lager.
Nick the Greek covers the counter-service middle. Its online ordering storefront for Craftsman Way lists menu hours of 10:30 a.m. to 8:40 p.m. Those are ordering hours, not confirmed dine-in hours, but they put it in the slot from late morning to early evening, without a reservation.
Put together, the week looks like this. Sunday morning starts at Flecha at 9. Weekday lunch has three choices at three different speeds. Harland's 9 p.m. close and Nick the Greek's 8:40 p.m. last order hand the late weeknight slot to Flecha, which stays open until 10 Monday through Thursday and until 11 on Friday and Saturday. Each restaurant ended up with a part of the day the other two don't fully cover.
Posted hours show how a restaurant runs. They don't show whether the neighborhood has adopted it. One booking does.
The 4SConnect Black or White Winter Soiree is on Saturday, December 5, from 5:30 to 10 p.m. at Flecha Cantina, 10514 Craftsman Way. Tickets are $35 each or $60 per pair, which includes dinner and two drink tickets, and the event is 21 and over. Picking a venue for a ticketed community dinner means trusting the room to handle a crowd on a December Saturday. Barely a year after the Miguel's space changed hands, the 4S Ranch community calendar sends its winter party there.
That date also lands one year to the day after Nick the Greek's opening-day line at 10550 Craftsman Way.
The restaurants are only part of a local week, and the 4S Ranch Library at 10433 Reserve Drive has the busiest public schedule in the neighborhood this fall. Here's what's coming up, in date order:
If you're planning around the library events, the clock lines up neatly. The open mic ends at 7 p.m. on a Tuesday, during Flecha's Tacos + Tequila Tuesday, which runs from 3 p.m. to close. The Diwali program ends at 8 p.m. on a Tuesday, an hour before Harland's posted 9 p.m. close. The line dancing night ends at 8 p.m. on a Friday, with Flecha open until 11.
Del Sur's own big fall event, the Fall Festival at Village Green Park, took place September 26 and 27, so it's already in the books for this year. A few minutes south on Pomerado Road, St. Michael's Parish holds its annual fall festival on October 9 from 4 to 10 p.m. and October 10 from 2 to 10 p.m., with food, games, rides and a talent show.
Hours shift as restaurants settle in. Harland's January weekend schedule and its current daily one show how much they can change in a few months. Check each restaurant's own page before planning around a morning slot. Flecha takes reservations through its website. Harland and Nick the Greek both offer online ordering for takeout.
